Wikiversity is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation that provides free learning materials, courses and a space for collaborative research. It was approved by the foundation in 2006 after a trial period, and the English version opened that summer. Unlike Wikipedia, which contains encyclopaedic articles, Wikiversity holds lessons, exercises, lecture notes and projects, which are written by volunteers, with the aim of supporting learning at all levels. It is available in many languages, though most editions are small, and the English one is the largest. Like other Wikimedia projects, it is released under free licences, and it is much less visited than Wikipedia.
