Construction of Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos"

March 2001

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is the main airport of Greece, located near Spata, about thirty kilometres east of Athens. It opened in the spring of 2001, replacing the older Hellinikon airport, which was cramped, close to residential areas and unable to expand. The new airport was built by a consortium led by the German company Hochtief on a public-private basis, and it was ready ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympics hosted by Athens. It is named after Eleftherios Venizelos, a Cretan statesman who was prime minister of Greece several times in the early twentieth century. The airport serves millions of passengers a year, many of them tourists heading for the Greek islands.
