Release of French Wikipedia

23 March 2001

The French-language edition of Wikipedia was launched in spring 2001, only weeks after the English-language version, and was one of the first editions in a language other than English. Like the other editions, it is written by volunteers and is freely licensed. It grew rapidly and became one of the largest editions, with millions of articles. It has been particularly active in covering topics related to French-speaking countries in Europe, Africa and North America. It is run by the Wikimedia Foundation, and a local association, Wikimedia France, supports the community and its projects.
