Release of Catalan Wikipedia

16 March 2001

The Catalan edition of Wikipedia, called Viquipedia, is one of the oldest and most active language editions of the encyclopedia, and it was started in the first weeks of the multilingual project, when only a few editions existed. Catalan is spoken by several million people in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and other areas, and its Wikipedia community is large in relation to the number of speakers. It has grown to several hundred thousand articles. The edition was a participant in the Spanish Wikipedia fork controversy of 2002, in which Spanish editors left, and in 2008 it ran a campaign in support of free knowledge. The community maintains close links with Catalan universities and cultural organisations.
