2001 insurgency in Macedonia

from 22 January 2001 to 13 August 2001

The 2001 insurgency in Macedonia was an armed conflict between the Macedonian security forces and the National Liberation Army, a group of ethnic Albanian fighters who demanded greater rights for the Albanian minority. It began in the north near Tetovo, and the fighting spread through villages in the north and west, with sieges and shelling but relatively limited casualties. International mediators from the European Union and NATO helped negotiate the Ohrid Framework Agreement, which ended the conflict. The agreement increased the use of the Albanian language, expanded Albanian representation in public institutions and the police, and changed the constitution. NATO collected weapons handed in by the insurgents.
