Creation of macOS

24 March 2001

MacOS, first released as Mac OS X, is the operating system for Apple's Mac computers. The first public version, 10.0, code-named Cheetah, replaced the older classic Mac OS and was built on a Unix foundation derived from NeXTSTEP, the system developed by Steve Jobs's company NeXT, which Apple acquired in the late 1990s. It introduced the Aqua graphical interface, the Dock and protected memory for stability. Apple later shortened the name to OS X in 2012 and renamed it macOS in 2016. The system has been updated yearly since, and it also provided the basis for iOS and other Apple platforms.
