Release of VLC media player

1 February 2001

VLC media player is a free and open-source media player and streaming system that plays almost any audio or video file, as well as DVDs, discs and network streams, without needing extra codecs. It began as a student project at the Ecole Centrale Paris, as part of the VideoLAN project for streaming video over a university network, and the code was released under the GNU General Public License. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile systems, and its icon is a traffic cone, a reference to the students' collection of cones. It became one of the most downloaded programs in the world. VLC is developed by volunteers and is supported by the non-profit VideoLAN organisation.
