Release of German Wikipedia

16 March 2001

The German-language edition of Wikipedia started in March 2001, only weeks after the English edition, and is one of the oldest and largest of the many language editions. It grew rapidly with the support of volunteer authors across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and by the mid-2000s it was among the biggest of the encyclopedias on the internet. German editors developed a strong tradition of emphasis on reliable sources and on rules for the relevance of topics. In 2004 the German chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia Deutschland, was founded in Berlin as the first national chapter. The German edition has long been the second or third largest after English and others in the number of active contributors.
