Tenzin Gyatso was born on 6 July 1935 in Taktser. The 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, was born Lhamo Thondup to a farming family in northeastern Tibet and was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor at the age of two. He was enthroned in 1940 and took political power in 1950, as Chinese forces entered Tibet. After the failed uprising of 1959 he fled to India, where he set up the Tibetan government in exile at Dharamsala. He has promoted a Middle Way approach seeking genuine autonomy for Tibet instead of independence, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He has also written and lectured widely on compassion and dialogue between religion and science, and in 2011 he gave up his political role.
