Publication of The Hobbit

21 September 1937

The Hobbit is a fantasy novel by the English author J. R. R. Tolkien, a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, published by George Allen & Unwin. It tells how the quiet hobbit Bilbo Baggins is recruited by the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves to help reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug, and in the course of the journey he finds the One Ring. Tolkien began it as a story for his children, and its success led his publisher to ask for a sequel, which became The Lord of the Rings. The book's world, Middle-earth, and its characters shaped modern fantasy literature and inspired films, games and illustrations.
