Second Italo-Ethiopian War

from 3 October 1935 to 19 February 1937

The Second Italo-Ethiopian War was a colonial war in which Fascist Italy invaded and conquered Ethiopia, one of the few African states that had kept its independence. Italian forces entered from Eritrea and Italian Somaliland in the autumn of 1935 with modern weapons, aircraft and, in violation of international agreements, poison gas, against which the Ethiopian forces were largely helpless. Addis Ababa fell in May 1936, and Emperor Haile Selassie went into exile, after appealing in person to the League of Nations in Geneva for help. The League imposed only limited sanctions, which damaged its credibility. Ethiopia was merged with Eritrea and Somaliland into Italian East Africa and remained under occupation until Allied forces liberated it in 1941.
