Christ the Redeemer is a colossal statue of Jesus Christ with outstretched arms standing on the summit of Corcovado mountain, overlooking Rio de Janeiro. The idea for a monument on the peak had been suggested in the nineteenth century, and a Catholic campaign took it up in 1920. It was designed by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa with the French sculptor Paul Landowski and the engineer Albert Caquot, and it was built in reinforced concrete covered with soapstone tiles. It rises about thirty metres, plus its pedestal, and was inaugurated in 1931. It became the symbol of Rio and of Brazil, and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
