José Mujica was born on 20 May 1935 in Montevideo. A Uruguayan politician, Mujica was a leftist guerrilla in the Tupamaros movement in the 1960s and 1970s, was shot several times and spent about fourteen years in prison, much of it in harsh solitary conditions, under the military dictatorship. After the return of democracy he became a congressman, senator and minister, and served as President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. His government legalized abortion, same-sex marriage and the regulated sale of cannabis. He was known as the world's humblest president for living on a small farm and giving away most of his salary.
