Founding of Griffith Observatory

14 May 1935

Griffith Observatory is a public observatory and science museum on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles, built with funds left by the Welsh-born businessman Griffith J. Griffith, who donated the land to the city and wanted astronomy to be available to the public. Its Art Deco building opened in the 1930s with a Zeiss planetarium projector, a Foucault pendulum and a solar telescope, and it has been visited by many millions of people. It has been the setting of films, including Rebel Without a Cause, and offers one of the best views of the city and the Hollywood Sign. It was renovated and expanded in the early 2000s, and public access to its telescopes is free.
