Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy i slava, i volia, which means Ukraine has not yet perished, nor her glory and freedom, is the national anthem of Ukraine. The words were written in 1862 by the ethnographer and poet Pavlo Chubynskyi, and the music was composed by the Greek Catholic priest Mykhailo Verbytskyi, becoming popular among Ukrainians in Galicia in the 1860s. It was adopted as the anthem of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918, and after a long period of suppression under Soviet rule it was restored as the state anthem after independence, with a law in 2003 fixing its text. It has gained new prominence since the Russian invasion of 2022.
