Shinzō Abe was born on 21 September 1954 in Shinjuku. A Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party, Abe became the youngest post-war prime minister in 2006 and resigned a year later because of illness. He returned to office in 2012 and ultimately became the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history, until he stepped down in 2020 for health reasons. His economic programme, nicknamed Abenomics, combined monetary easing, public spending and structural reform. He worked to strengthen Japan's defence role, including a 2015 reinterpretation of the pacifist constitution, and promoted a free and open Indo-Pacific. In July 2022 he was shot and killed while campaigning in Nara, which shocked Japan.
