James Cameron was born on 16 August 1954 in Kapuskasing. A Canadian filmmaker and deep-sea explorer, Cameron made his name with The Terminator before directing Aliens, The Abyss and Terminator 2. His Titanic became the highest-grossing film in history at that time and won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He broke his own record with Avatar, and its sequels pioneered new digital and 3D techniques. A longtime ocean enthusiast, he made documentaries about the Titanic wreck and in 2012 piloted a submersible alone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean.
