Alexander Lukashenka was born on 30 August 1954 in Kopyś. A Belarusian politician, Lukashenka started as a manager of a collective farm and became a member of the Belarusian parliament, where he gained attention as an anti-corruption campaigner. He was elected the first president of independent Belarus in 1994 and has held the office since. A series of referendums extended his powers and later removed term limits, and opposition groups and international observers have regularly criticized the fairness of elections. After the disputed 2020 vote, mass protests were met with a harsh crackdown, and the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions. He has maintained close ties with Russia and allowed Russian forces to use Belarusian territory in 2022.
