Founding of CERN

29 September 1954

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was founded by twelve European countries to build a major physics laboratory in the aftermath of the Second World War, when European research needed to pool resources. It is located on the border of France and Switzerland near Geneva. Its accelerators have produced notable discoveries, including the W and Z bosons in 1983 and the Higgs boson, announced in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider. The World Wide Web was invented at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 to help scientists share information. The organisation has grown to more than twenty member states and is a model of international scientific cooperation.
