Petro Poroshenko was born on 26 September 1965 in Bolhrad. A Ukrainian businessman and politician, Poroshenko made a fortune in the confectionery industry and was known as the Chocolate King. A supporter of the Orange Revolution and a minister under several governments, he supported the Euromaidan protests and was elected president in 2014, soon after Russia annexed Crimea and war began in the Donbas. His administration signed an association agreement with the European Union, secured visa-free travel to Europe and promoted the army, language and church independence. He lost the 2019 election to Volodymyr Zelensky in a landslide, and later faced treason charges that he denied.
