Rhodesia

from 11 November 1965 to 1 June 1979

Rhodesia was an unrecognised state in southern Africa, formerly the British colony of Southern Rhodesia, whose white minority government under Prime Minister Ian Smith made a Unilateral Declaration of Independence rather than accept majority rule. The United Kingdom and the United Nations declared the declaration illegal, and imposed sanctions. A guerrilla war, fought by the African nationalist movements ZANU and ZAPU, intensified in the 1970s, and the government eventually agreed to share power in a short-lived state called Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. The Lancaster House talks in 1979 led to elections in which Robert Mugabe won, and the country became independent as Zimbabwe in 1980.
