Beer Hall Putsch

from 8 November 1923 to 9 November 1923

The Beer Hall Putsch was a failed attempt by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to seize power in Bavaria and then in Germany. On the evening of 8 November, Nazi supporters stormed a political meeting in a Munich beer hall and tried to force Bavarian leaders to join a march on Berlin. The putsch collapsed the next day when police opened fire on the marchers near the Feldherrnhalle, killing several Nazis and police officers. Hitler was arrested and tried for treason, which gave him a national platform for his views, and was sentenced to five years but served less than a year in Landsberg prison. There he wrote the first volume of Mein Kampf and concluded that the Nazis should seek power by legal means.
