Founding of Colombia men's national football team

1924

The Colombia men's national football team represents Colombia in international competition and is run by the Colombian Football Federation, which was founded in the 1920s. The team first appeared in the World Cup in 1962, and became well known in the 1990s with a golden generation that included Carlos Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla and René Higuita. It reached the knockout stage in 1990, and its 1994 campaign ended in disappointment and tragedy when defender Andrés Escobar was shot dead after returning home. Colombia won the Copa América in 2001 as hosts, and reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup, where James Rodríguez won the Golden Boot as top scorer. It was runner-up in the 2024 Copa América.
