The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise strike by Japanese aircraft carriers on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, on Oahu in Hawaii, on the morning of 7 December 1941. The attack was planned by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto to destroy the Pacific Fleet while Japan expanded into Southeast Asia, which followed American oil and trade embargoes. It sank or damaged most of the battleships present and killed more than two thousand Americans, though the aircraft carriers were away. The following day the United States declared war on Japan, and Germany and Italy declared war on the United States a few days later. The attack brought the country fully into the Second World War.
