2025 Tibet earthquake

7 January 2025

The 2025 Tibet earthquake was a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that struck Tingri County in the Shigatse region of Tibet, not far from Mount Everest and the border with Nepal. Shaking was felt across a wide area, including in Nepal, Bhutan and northern India. More than a hundred people were killed, and many buildings, particularly traditional houses of stone and mud, were destroyed in villages near the epicenter. It was caused by slip on a normal fault in the Himalayan region, where the Indian plate collides with the Eurasian plate. Chinese authorities carried out a large rescue operation in the cold winter conditions of the high plateau.
