January 2025 Southern California wildfires

from 7 January 2025 to 31 January 2025

The January 2025 Southern California wildfires were a series of destructive fires in the Los Angeles area, the largest of which were the Palisades Fire, in the Pacific Palisades district near the coast, and the Eaton Fire, in the Altadena area to the north of Pasadena. They began on the same day, fanned by extremely strong Santa Ana winds after a dry period, and spread rapidly through residential neighbourhoods. Thousands of homes and other buildings were destroyed, and more than two dozen people died. Hundreds of thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate. Insurers estimated the losses at tens of billions of dollars, making it one of the costliest wildfire disasters in US history, and it prompted debate about fire management and climate.
