Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243

25 December 2024

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 was a scheduled flight from Baku to Grozny, in Russia's Chechnya, operated by an Embraer 190 jet. The aircraft diverted and crashed near the city of Aktau, in Kazakhstan, on the other side of the Caspian Sea, after it was damaged in flight. Of the 67 people on board, 38 died and 29 survived. Evidence, including damage to the wreckage and statements by Azerbaijani officials, indicated that the aircraft had been hit by fragments from Russian air-defence missiles fired at Ukrainian drones in the area. Russia later acknowledged that its air defences had been operating nearby, and the Azerbaijani government demanded an apology and compensation, causing a diplomatic dispute.
