2025 Potomac River mid-air collision

29 January 2025

The 2025 Potomac River mid-air collision occurred over Washington, DC, when American Eagle Flight 5342, a regional jet arriving from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in the evening. Both aircraft fell into the Potomac River, and all 67 people on the two aircraft died, including 64 on the airliner and three soldiers on the helicopter. It was the deadliest aviation accident in the United States since 2001. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash, looking at air traffic control staffing, the helicopter routes near the airport and the altitude at which the helicopter was flying. The accident led to restrictions on helicopter traffic near the airport.
