2021 German federal election

26 September 2021

The 2021 German federal election chose the members of the 20th Bundestag and marked the end of Angela Merkel's sixteen years as chancellor, as she did not run again. The Social Democratic Party, led by Olaf Scholz, narrowly won the most votes, ahead of the CDU/CSU under Armin Laschet, which had its worst-ever result. The Greens made their best showing to date. After negotiations, the SPD, the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats agreed to form a coalition, the first three-party national government of this kind in the modern history of the Federal Republic, and Scholz became chancellor in December.
