On 6 October 2021 the World Health Organization recommended the vaccine RTS,S/AS01, branded Mosquirix, for children in sub-Saharan Africa and other regions with high malaria transmission, the first vaccine against a human parasitic disease. Developed by GlaxoSmithKline over some 30 years, it cuts severe malaria in young children by around 30 per cent. In October 2023 the WHO also recommended a second vaccine, R21/Matrix-M, developed at Oxford, with higher efficacy and lower cost. Malaria, spread by Anopheles mosquitoes, kills about 600,000 people a year, most of them African children under five. Vaccination programmes began in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi in 2019.
