Founding of AUKUS

15 September 2021

AUKUS is a security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, announced jointly by the leaders of the three countries. Its best-known part is an agreement to help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines, a technology the United States had shared with only one country before, the United Kingdom. A second area of cooperation covers advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and hypersonic weapons. The pact is widely seen as a response to China's growing military power in the Indo-Pacific region, which Beijing has criticized. It also caused a diplomatic row with France, because Australia canceled an earlier contract for French diesel-electric submarines. The three governments have said it will strengthen deterrence and defense industry cooperation.
