The first round of the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election was held in March, and a runoff followed in April. Volodymyr Zelensky, a comedian and actor best known for a television series in which he played a schoolteacher who unexpectedly becomes president, won the runoff with about three quarters of the vote, defeating the incumbent, Petro Poroshenko. Zelensky ran an anti-establishment campaign focused on fighting corruption and ending the war in the east, and he made heavy use of social media. After taking office he dissolved parliament, and his party, Servant of the People, won an outright majority in early elections in July. Voting could not take place in Crimea and parts of the Donbas because of the Russian occupation and the war.
