2019 fire at Notre-Dame de Paris

15 April 2019

A fire broke out in the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris, the medieval Gothic cathedral on the Île de la Cité, during renovation work on an evening in spring 2019. The blaze consumed the oak roof framework, nicknamed the forest, and brought down the 19th-century spire designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, while firefighters prevented the two main bell towers from collapsing and saved much of the stone vaulting, the main structure and many works of art and relics. Investigators have not established the cause; they examined an electrical fault or a discarded cigarette, with no evidence of arson. President Emmanuel Macron pledged to rebuild, and donations of hundreds of millions of euros came from around the world. The cathedral reopened for worship in December 2024.
