The 2019 Sri Lanka bombings were a series of coordinated suicide attacks on Easter Sunday, targeting churches and luxury hotels in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa. The attackers were members of a local Islamist group, National Thowheeth Jama'ath, and the Islamic State later claimed responsibility. More than two hundred and fifty people were killed and hundreds were injured, including many foreign visitors, in the deadliest violence in the country since the end of its civil war in 2009. The attacks were followed by a state of emergency, a temporary social media ban and anti-Muslim violence in some areas. Inquiries later criticised the authorities for failing to act on intelligence warnings.
