Christchurch mosque shootings

15 March 2019

The Christchurch mosque shootings were two consecutive attacks on worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, on a Friday during prayers. A lone gunman, an Australian white supremacist, killed 51 people and wounded many more, and livestreamed the first attack online. He was arrested and later pleaded guilty, receiving a sentence of life imprisonment without parole, the first in New Zealand's history. Prime minister Jacinda Ardern's government quickly banned most semi-automatic weapons. The attack led to international efforts, known as the Christchurch Call, to limit the spread of terrorist content online.
