Reiwa era

1 May 2019

The Reiwa era is the current era of Japanese history, which began when Naruhito became emperor following the abdication of his father Akihito, the first abdication of a Japanese emperor in about two centuries. The new era name was announced by the government in advance, and it was the first to be taken from a work of Japanese literature, the eighth-century poetry anthology Man'yoshu, rather than from Chinese classics. It is usually translated as beautiful harmony or order and harmony. Japanese eras are used officially on calendars, documents and coins, with the year counted from the accession of the emperor. The first years of Reiwa were marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponed Tokyo Olympics.
