The 2019 European Parliament election was held across all twenty-eight member states, including the United Kingdom, which had not yet left the Union. Turnout was about fifty-one percent, the highest in twenty years. The center-right European People's Party remained the largest group, but together with the Socialists it lost the majority it had held since 1979. The Liberals, renamed Renew Europe, and the Greens made gains, while nationalist and Eurosceptic parties did well in countries such as Italy, France and the United Kingdom without dominating the Parliament. The system of lead candidates was set aside after the election, and Ursula von der Leyen was chosen as President of the European Commission.
