2017 Saint Petersburg Metro attack

3 April 2017

A bomb exploded in a train carriage on the Saint Petersburg Metro between the stations Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut in the afternoon, during a visit to the city by President Vladimir Putin. About fifteen people were killed and dozens were injured. A second device was found and defused at another station, Ploshchad Vosstaniya. Russian investigators identified the attacker as a suicide bomber, a young man from Central Asia who held Russian citizenship, and treated the case as a terrorist act. Several people were later arrested and tried in connection with the plot. The attack led to increased security on public transport across Russia.
