2017 Westminster attack

22 March 2017

The 2017 Westminster attack was a terrorist incident in central London in which a man drove a rented car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, then crashed it outside the Palace of Westminster. He then ran into the grounds of the Houses of Parliament and fatally stabbed an unarmed police officer, Keith Palmer, before being shot dead by an armed police officer. Five people died besides the attacker, and dozens were injured, among them people from many countries. The attacker, a convert to Islam named Khalid Masood who had a criminal record, was found to have acted alone, though the Islamic State group claimed that he was one of its soldiers. The attack led to a review of security around Parliament and to a new barrier along the bridge.
