Discovery of Pandia

2017

Pandia is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, only a few kilometers across, which was found by a team led by the astronomer Scott Sheppard during a survey of the planet's surroundings with large telescopes. It belongs to the Himalia group, a family of moons that travel together on similar orbits in the same direction as the planet's rotation, and which are thought to be the fragments of a larger body broken up long ago. It was named after Pandia, a daughter of Zeus and the Moon goddess Selene in Greek mythology. Like most of Jupiter's smaller moons, it is too faint to be seen without a large telescope.
