2016 Munich shooting

22 July 2016

The 2016 Munich shooting was a mass shooting carried out by an eighteen-year-old German-Iranian, David Sonboly, who killed nine people, mostly teenagers, in and around the Olympia shopping centre before taking his own life. Police operated a large manhunt in the afternoon and evening, and the city was effectively shut down while rumours of multiple gunmen spread on social media. Investigators later concluded that the attacker acted alone, and that he had been bullied and had mental health problems, and that his choice of victims was driven by far-right and racist views. The attack took place on the fifth anniversary of Anders Breivik's massacre in Norway, which he had studied.
