Creation of Swift

2 June 2014

Swift is a programming language developed by Apple and presented to the public at its developer conference in June 2014. It was designed as a modern replacement for Objective-C for building software for iPhones, iPads, Macs and other Apple devices, with a cleaner syntax, automatic memory management and features meant to prevent common errors, such as optional types for values that may be missing. The work had been started in 2010 by the engineer Chris Lattner, who had also created the LLVM compiler. In 2015 Apple released Swift as open-source software, and it has since been used on servers and other platforms. It quickly became one of the most popular languages in mobile programming.
