The war in Donbas was an armed conflict in eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It broke out in the weeks after the Euromaidan protests, the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych and Russia's annexation of Crimea. The separatists proclaimed the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics and received weapons, equipment and personnel from Russia, which denied direct involvement. The downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July 2014 killed all aboard. The Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015 reduced the fighting but did not resolve it, and thousands of people died. In February 2022 Russia recognised the two republics and launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
