Construction of Kazimierz Górski National Stadium

29 January 2012

The Kazimierz Gorski National Stadium, usually called the National Stadium, is a football stadium in Warsaw, on the bank of the Vistula River, built for the 2012 European Championship, which Poland co-hosted with Ukraine. It stands on the site of the former Stadion Dziesieciolecia, a Communist-era stadium that had become a huge open-air market. The new stadium has a retractable roof and a facade of red and white, the colours of the Polish flag. It staged the opening match of the tournament and further games, and it is the home ground of the Polish national team. It is named after Kazimierz Gorski, the coach who led Poland to Olympic gold in 1972 and to third place at the 1974 World Cup.
