2011 South Sudanese independence referendum

15 January 2011

The 2011 South Sudanese independence referendum was a week-long vote in which the people of southern Sudan decided whether to remain part of Sudan or become an independent country. It was held under the terms of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, which had ended the long civil war between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. Voters, who lined up in large numbers, including exiles abroad, chose independence by an overwhelming majority of nearly ninety-nine percent. The result was accepted by the government in Khartoum, and South Sudan became an independent state in July 2011, the newest country in the world. It was soon followed by internal conflict and disputes with Sudan.
