The 2011 Yemeni revolution was a wave of protests against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had governed Yemen for over three decades, part of the movement known as the Arab Spring. Demonstrators, among them students, tribal leaders and opposition parties, demanded political reform and an end to corruption and unemployment, and were met with force. The country slid toward civil conflict as army units defected and fighting broke out in Sanaa. Saleh survived an attack on his palace, and after mediation by the Gulf Cooperation Council he agreed to hand over power to his vice president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. Hadi was elected, but the transition failed to settle Yemen's divisions, and the country descended into civil war.
