The 2011 Egyptian revolution was a wave of mass protests that forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign after about thirty years in power. Inspired by the uprising in Tunisia, demonstrators gathered on Police Day to protest against police brutality, corruption, unemployment and the lack of political freedom. Tahrir Square in Cairo became the centre of the movement, and protests spread to other cities, despite crackdowns and an internet shutdown. After eighteen days, Mubarak stepped down and the military's Supreme Council took power. Elections later brought Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood to the presidency, but he was removed by the army in 2013, and Egypt's political transition remained turbulent.
