Launch of STS-133

24 February 2011

STS-133 was the last flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery, the oldest of the orbiters in service, which had flown its first mission in 1984. It was commanded by Steven Lindsey and carried the Leonardo permanent multipurpose module to the International Space Station, together with supplies, a spare parts platform and Robonaut 2, a humanoid robot built by NASA and General Motors. Launch was delayed several times because of cracks found in the external tank. The astronauts performed two spacewalks. Discovery landed at Kennedy Space Center in March, having completed thirty-nine missions and spent more time in space than any other orbiter.
