World War II in Yugoslavia began when Germany, Italy and their allies invaded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which was quickly defeated and then divided. A puppet state, the Independent State of Croatia, was run by the fascist Ustase, who persecuted Serbs, Jews and Roma, and Germany occupied Serbia directly. Two resistance movements emerged: the royalist Chetniks under Draza Mihailovic, and the communist-led Partisans under Josip Broz Tito. The Partisans became the dominant force and were recognised by the Allies, and they fought both the Axis and their domestic opponents in a brutal civil war. By 1945 Tito's forces had liberated the country, and a communist federal Yugoslavia was established.
