Invasion of Yugoslavia

from 6 April 1941 to 18 April 1941

The invasion of Yugoslavia was an attack by Nazi Germany and its allies, among them Italy, Hungary and Bulgaria, on the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It followed a coup in Belgrade, in which officers had overthrown the regency that had signed the Tripartite Pact with the Axis, and Hitler responded by ordering an immediate invasion. Belgrade was heavily bombed, and German armored columns advanced from several directions, while the poorly equipped Yugoslav army, divided by ethnic tensions, quickly collapsed. The government and the young King Peter II went into exile. Yugoslavia was divided up among the occupiers, and a puppet state was set up in Croatia. Resistance soon began, which developed into a bitter war between the Partisans, Chetniks and occupiers.
